Where Hope Flows: Transforming Lives Through Clean Water in Madagascar

The Essence of Water

Water is the thread of life, weaving together the fabric of existence for all living beings. For communities in the far bush regions of Madagascar, this essence has been a distant dream—until now. Through the collective efforts of Sponsorship Network International (SNI) and our dedicated local partners, Save the Youth Madagascar, the past year has been transformative.

Together, we have turned hope into reality, building one fresh water well each month, culminating in 12 wells that now bring life, hope, and opportunity to thousands.

Madagascar’s Harsh Terrain and Challenges

Madagascar, the world’s fourth-largest island, is renowned for its unique biodiversity and striking landscapes, ranging from lush rainforests to arid deserts. The southern regions, where these wells were built, are particularly harsh, characterized by rocky terrains, dry climates, and sparse vegetation. This arid environment poses significant challenges for access to water, as rivers are seasonal, and groundwater often lies deep below rocky layers.

Economically, Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world, with the majority of its population relying on subsistence farming. In these remote bush areas, villages are isolated and lack basic infrastructure, including roads, schools, and healthcare facilities. Without access to clean water, residents face severe hardships, with limited opportunities for education, economic development, or health improvement.

Life Without Water: A Daily Struggle

Imagine walking miles under the scorching sun to fetch water—water that is murky and often unsafe to drink. This is the grim reality for many in the arid south of Madagascar. For the villagers of Anjamananaky, Andafisaky and Belafiky, where drought is an unrelenting companion, even basic hygiene is a luxury. Bathing, washing clothes, cooking, and even drinking water—simple acts many take for granted—are constant challenges.

Without clean water, the rhythm of life slows down, held captive by the demands of survival. Women and children spend hours each day walking to distant rivers, their dreams of education, entrepreneurship, and community-building left parched in the dust.

Water Where There Was None

This year, that narrative changed. Thanks to our donors, volunteers, and the unyielding commitment of individuals like Mr. Hachim Abdillah, many villages have witnessed miracles in the Ampanihy area. (Find it on the map, by clicking here.)

In Belafiky, where two wells were completed, villagers celebrated the end of a struggle that had defined their lives. Families now have access to clean water, giving them the ability to grow crops and maintain better hygiene.

In Andafisaky, two wells were constructed after weeks of hard work. These wells now serve over 1,300 people, ensuring they have safe, accessible water for drinking, cooking, and daily needs.

Sakamasay also saw the completion of two wells, bringing much-needed relief to this bush village.

In Anjamananaky, where two wells were built, workers faced harsh conditions, digging up to 30 meters deep. The joy of clean water was overwhelming, with villagers rushing to fill their containers, knowing their lives were forever changed.

Tanantsoa was the site of another well, providing water to hundreds of villagers who had lived without access for years.

Currently, wells in Bekily and Reampototse are still under construction, but their completion is eagerly awaited by communities who understand that water means life.

Economic Hope and Health

The arrival of clean water in the villages of southern Madagascar has unlocked new opportunities. Children now spend less time fetching water and more time in classrooms. Women can nurture small-scale gardens, providing nutrition for their families and even surplus to sell in local markets. Communities can dream of healthier, more sustainable futures.

In Belafiky, where our 8th well was completed after months of hammering through rocky terrain, over 2,700 villagers now have access to clean water. Families who once subsisted on meager, drought-ridden crops can now grow vegetables and keep their animals hydrated. The ripple effects of water are endless.

A Shared Triumph

Each well stands as a testament to what we can achieve together. From the 2nd well in Andafy Saka, which took 15 weeks to complete due to rocky soil, to the 7th well in Befamanta, every drop of water now flowing is a symbol of resilience, determination, and compassion.

Gratitude and Forward Momentum

To our sponsors and volunteers, thank you. Your support has not just quenched thirst; it has revived spirits and renewed hope. Special thanks go to our local partner, Save the Youth Madagascar, for their steadfast dedication, and to the hardworking teams who defied nature’s obstacles to find water.

As we celebrate these 12 wells, we are reminded that the journey is far from over. Many villages in Madagascar still wait for their miracle.

Join Us in Bringing Life and Hope

The impact of clean water is profound—it transforms lives, uplifts communities, and creates opportunities for a better future. But there are still thousands of families in remote Madagascar waiting for their turn to access this precious resource.

You can be a part of this life-changing mission. Your donation, no matter the size, can help us dig more wells, bring water to more parched villages, and restore dignity to those who need it most.

DRC – The Next Chapter

Hello everyone, this is Michel Steiner, checking in from my latest visit to the Bana Mayele Educational Centre in Kinshasa, Congo.

This being my fourth visit to Kinshasa, the sights, sounds, and smells of Congo were now familiar to me. At last, after a 22-hour trip from Zurich, the gates of the compound were open before us and the first glace into the central yard was a pleasant contrast from the poverty, dirt and confusion that was part of the reality for the 16 million inhabitants that surrounded us. The various quarters of the facility, all lighted in the midnight sky with garden lamps giving it an almost surreal atmosphere.

First impressions

Morning Excitement

The next morning after coffee the excitement mounted as we toured the grounds to see what changes had taken place since our last visit. The dining hall and kitchen showed the most striking transformation from just a year ago.

Transformations at Bana Mayele

Fully outfitted, decorated and able to cater to up to 300 guests, capable of hosting occasional weddings and funerals as a potential self-sustainment and vocational training possibility for the young inhabitants of the Centre the final piece of the operational infrastructure was in place. From now on the focus could be transitioned to education, expansion and further development and improvement of the program.

Team Dynamics

My assignment was unique this year – film director. I embarked on a new challenge to my already broad spectrum of responsibilities as the Founder and Director of SNI; that being, to help present Bana Mayele to the world. With camera and microphone in hand, a dedicated team member and I set out to showcase the realities of central Africa to those who have never experienced this part of the world.

The Power of Volunteering

My travel companion, Joachim from Germany, a former professional sports car racer, mechanical engineer, electrician and general all-rounder, jumped straight into any task that he could find needed improvement to keep his active mind productive. After checking the water tanks, inspecting the pump system, he turned his capabilities to the two vehicles used daily. Clearly, he was in his element, as a volunteer he brought his most valuable assets to Congo, know-how and initiative.

High Gear Operations

By the second day, our full team had arrived and our operation moved into high gear. With volunteers taking on roles such as sports trainers holding activities and games, teachers passing on the basics of English while learning from the kids the local language themselves, medics to help the doctors on site and a wide variety of other responsibilities, each individual was in good spirits, ready to help tackle new challenges every day at Bana Mayele.

Reflecting on the Journey

As I reflect on this incredible journey, I’m filled with gratitude for the dedicated team, our local Project Manager Madlen, and volunteers who bring their skills, passion, and heart to Bana Mayele. Each visit renews my commitment to this mission and strengthens my resolve to continue expanding our reach.

Looking to the Future

Together, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of these children, offering them not just a place to learn, but a place to thrive. As we look to the future, our goal remains clear: to provide even more children with the opportunities they deserve, and to nurture their potential in an environment where they can truly flourish.

Bringing Hope to Uganda: Our Recent Quest

We’re thrilled to share the impact of our recent journey to Uganda, where we brought hope and assistance to those in need. Our mission took us to the capital, Kampala and to the Fort Portal region near the East Congo border. We encountered both the breathtaking landscapes and the pressing challenges faced by local communities.

Uganda is home to some of the largest refugee populations globally, a stark reminder of the ongoing conflicts that have plagued the region for decades. Most refugees come from South Sudan (57%), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (32%), Somalia (3%), and Burundi (3%), all in search of safety and stability.

Despite these challenges, our team with ‘Anything for a Smile’ – the partnering NGO and other local organizations and volunteers, – made a meaningful impact. We conducted hospital visits, providing essential medical care and health education to those in need. Additionally, we brightened pediatric wards with vibrant mural paintings, bringing joy and comfort to young patients and their families in their time of need.

Our efforts extended beyond healthcare, as we also visited rural schools to provide educational support and resources to underserved children. These visits were particularly poignant as we witnessed firsthand the resilience and determination of young students and teachers in the face of poor conditions and adversity.

Our collaboration with the medical team was instrumental in ensuring our efforts reached remote villages and underserved populations, reflecting our commitment to leaving no one behind.

As we reflect on our journey, we recognize that the need for ongoing support within Africa , as well as in Uganda is imminent. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who supported us and urge continued solidarity in our shared mission of compassion and service.

Stay tuned for more updates on our efforts and how you can get involved in bringing hope to communities in Africa!
